Why Your Bedroom Still Looks Messy After You’ve Cleaned It

There’s nothing quite like cleaning a bedroom, stepping back, and realising it still looks messy anyway. It doesn’t make any sense at all. Like, you’ve just rearranged the room to make more space, the laundry’s away, the bed’s made, the surfaces are wiped, and the room is still just not there.

It’s still looking off, not cozy, not elegant, not put together, you name it. It’s the kind of thing that makes people want to shut the door and pretend the bedroom doesn’t exist, which is obviously not ideal when it’s the room that’s meant to feel calm.

It’s a space for sleeping, sure, but it’s your space to unwind, and if it still looks messy, well, there’s something off.

While a fun, expensive upgrade might sound like a good idea, technically, even throwing money at this probably won’t solve the problem here. For the most part, it’s just going to be some visual noise that needs to be fixed up here.

Is there Tiny Little Stuff Everywhere?

It’s a weird question to just ask upfront here, but yes, this actually does need to be asked, though.  For the most part, this tends to be the main offender.

And it makes sense, cause you’re trying to make the room cute, like the little candle, the little tray, the little plant, the little jar, the little stack of books, the little photo frame, the little bowl that holds hair ties, the little decorative thing that was bought because it looked cute online.

But how many of those trinkets are you seeing in pictures online of a bedroom? How about in magazines or on TV? Not all that much, right?

Like, just a little bit. Most magazine bedrooms don’t have fifteen small things fighting for attention. They’ve got one lamp, one book, maybe one vase, and then a lot of space.

It’s annoying, but it works. At most, only pick two intentional areas, and leave it with what will have trinkets on it.

Open Storage is Basically Visual Stress

Have open shelves? How about floating shelves? How about glass shelving? Items out on display on your vanity and dresser?

Open storage can be helpful, but it’s also the fastest way to make a bedroom look permanently busy. Plus, shelves full of “sorted” piles still look like piles. Actually, you might find this surprising, but even baskets with random bits poking out still look like random bits.

Even clothing rails look cool on Pinterest, but don’t translate into real life.

How Much Texture is there?

This one is really weird, but it plays a part in the visual noise. Sometimes there’s too many textures when layering textures, like you need that sweet spot.

For example, having two or three rugs in a room looks weird, it doens’t make sense.

If you want to create warmth, it’ll be a lot easier to just look into installing carpets in your bedroom instead.

Also, maybe pick one design of throw pillow and have that match the throw blanket, maybe hide the rest of the extra blankets, just some ideas.

Hide Your Cords

Be it laptop cords, lamp cords, phone charger cords, in general bed side cable cords, well, it just doesn’t matter what these are, but it’s honestly really easy to hide cords nowadays, even just general cord management is easy (there’s plenty of things you can buy at your local store for this).
