This month I’ve decided I’m going to try to declutter a small area of my home each day. While I am trying really hard not to buy more stuff, with a toddler and a small house it can really feel like there is stuff everywhere sometimes. It builds and builds and then I just feel too overwhelmed to do anything about it.
So, for the month of July I’ve decided to run my very own little decluttering challenge to help make my home feel tidier and get to try to get rid of anything that’s not needed and isn’t being used.
We have recently finished doing up our garden and that included buying a lovely new shed.
Our lean to conservatory had become a bit of a dumping ground for random stuff and garden equipment so one of the first jobs has been to transfer everything to the shed and free up space in the lean to.

The lean to floor has some damage that needs repairing but once that is done we can buy some proper storage for this space and that should help balance other areas in the house where we simply don’t have enough storage for everything, like the kitchen and living room.
I also want to take a look at what we do and don’t need to keep, take some old junk items to the tip and giveaway on Facebook anything that still in good condition but that we aren’t using. I also plan to sell some clothes and a few other bits.
July Decluttering Challenge
Here are some of the main areas I plan to tackle this month:
Kitchen:
- Declutter mug and ramekin cupboard
- Tidy larder cupboard
- Organize sauce pans (I got new for Christmas and we still have all the old ones too!)
- Organize food cupboards, check dates of food.
- Defrost freezer
Living Room & Dining Room:
- Under stairs area -tidy coats and shoes
- Under stairs area – tidy shelves and rehome items
- Declutter bookshelf and DVD shelf
- Tidy dining room table are and windowsill
- Large toy chest – put away toys A is too old for now

Daughters Bedroom:
- Go through toys and choose some to donate
- Get rid of old clothes
- Organize under bed
- Tidy drawers in Kallax unit
Main Bedroom:
- Clear top of wardrobes (there is so much random junk sitting up there!)
- Try on clothes and donate/sell those I no longer want
- Bottom of wardrobes
- eBay pile- create new listings
- Take items to charity shop from storage boxes
- Sort box of CDs & DVDs
Misc:
- Landing cupboard – tidy, declutter, items to go into attic or to the charity shop.
Some of these jobs will take a few minutes where as others will need a couple of hours. However, I’m hoping if I can get a little done each day the improvement will help me to keep going and get everything done.

Decluttering can be a huge and overwhelming task so breaking in down into smaller more manageable chunks can really help. Of course I’ll also be roping my husband to help too. I’ll report back at the end of the month to let you know how I get on!
I’m going to be writing lots of posts about tidying and decluttering this month so keep an eye out if that’s something you’re interested in. One area I’m really keen to write about is toys and how to keep toy clutter to an absolute minimum. I’ll add a list of the posts to this piece too so they’re nice and easy to find.
If you’re joining in with a decluttering challenge this month I’d love to hear about it in the comments or you can join me on twitter using the hash tag #julydeclutteringchallenge
