5 Tips For Finding A Love That Feels Like Home

When it comes to building a life together, I feel lucky that I found someone who shares the same values as I do. Dating isn’t easy, and even in a long-term relationship, it can be hard to know when to take the next steps, such as moving in together.

In this post, I am going to take a look at some of the key things to consider when looking for someone to share your life and, eventually, a home with.

1. Work Out Your Values

Before setting out on the path to long-term love, it’s worth doing some self-reflection. Being clear on your own values can help you to see those things in others.

Whether you value kindness, ambition, honesty or a shared set of lifestyle goals, knowing what you want can help you to see when someone is truly aligned with you.

It can also give you the confidence to walk away when things aren’t right.

2. Look For Love In The Right Places

Having been with my husband for over fifteen years, I must admit that I have never used a dating app – they just weren’t as much of a thing back then, although online dating did exist.

And I know from friends that some dating platforms aren’t the best for those looking for a long-term relationship.

If you want to meet like-minded people, you need to be showing up in the right spaces, and that can look like a few different things:

  • Volunteer events or service projects are a great way to help in your community while meeting new people.

  • Niche apps are perfect for finding people who share your interests. For example, is your Christian faith important to you? You could try Christian Dating
  • Spending time in community-focused spaces (church groups, if that’s your thing or book clubs, fitness classes, etc.)

3. Ask The Big Questions Early On

When I was dating (all that time ago!) I knew that eventually I would want to start a family. Having children was important to me, and I wouldn’t have continued any relationship where my partner was against this.

Here are some of the big questions that you might want to think about discussing early on:

Family Plans: ‘Do you want children someday?’

Religious Faith: ‘Is faith/your religion important to you?’ ‘How will that impact our life together?’

Cultural: ‘What traditions or customs are important to you?’ or ‘How do you imagine blending our cultures or families?’

Fair Partnerships: ‘How do you see our family/home responsibilities being shared?’

Remember that you’re not interviewing someone, but it is important to talk about these things and ensure you share values as well as chemistry.

Of course, people can grow and change over time, and that’s totally normal. But being on the same page from the start can help to avoid misunderstandings and heartache later on.

4. Look At Actions, Not Words

Someone can say that they share your values, but it’s their actions that really matter and that will show you who they are.

For example, if they say family is important, how do they show this?

Do they meet up with their relatives often? Are they kind and respectful when talking about them?

When it comes to partnership, do they share the load with you and support your goals?

These actions, when you look for them, can often speak louder than words.

5. Trust In Your Instincts

Allow yourself space to process how your relationship is going.

Permit yourself to move slowly, trusting your intuition and keeping to your standards.

If something feels off, take time to reflect and reassess if you need to. Someone who truly cares for you will allow you to take time when you need it.

Final Thoughts

Building a long-lasting relationship, one that feels like home, starts with being honest with yourself about what you value and having the courage to hold your partner to those standards.

And while there should always be room for compromise, choosing someone you truly align with from the start makes all the difference.
