A little while ago I wrote about using an Ikea photo gallery Kit in our living room. While I do love it (mostly because it contains photographs of our little girl) I can’t help feel that it’s a little bit boring. So, I’ve been brainstorming to come up with lots of gallery wall ideas that are a bit more fun and exciting. If you’re thinking about creating your own picture gallery, hopefully, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here.

When creating a gallery wall a theme can really help tie everything together and help it feel cohesive.

15 Gallery Wall Ideas

1. Monochrome

Black and white is a classic combo you really can’t go wrong with. You can either choose all black frames, a combination of black and white frames or just white frames. This works well with just monochrome prints or black and white photographs too.

2. Notes and Quotes

If you’re a music lover you could frame music notation from old music books. Couple this with print outs of the corresponding lyrics for a wall to remind you of your love of music.

3. Pastel Colours

I love the subtlety of pastels and these are perfect for any rooms that need a calm feel such as nurseries and children’s bedrooms. Choose frames in ice-cream shades such as pale blue, light yellow and mint green.

4. Family Tree

I love the idea of creating a family tree, especially one that runs up a staircase. A great way to ensure the whole family is included and honour loved ones who are no longer with us.

5. Metallics

Choose metallic colours and frames uch as gold, bronze and silver always work well together and can be used to create a modern look or a more vintage chic.

6. Mixed Media

Anything goes with this one. Mix everything from colours to shapes, prints, photos, paintings, and sculptures. Throw it all together and it’s sure to look amazing.

7. Movies Or Musicals

I am a huge movie fan myself and have a huge framed Anchorman print in my bedroom! While the obvious choice would be movie posters, it could be anything movie-related at all for your gallery wall.

Quotes from your favourite film or musical (I’ve been eyeing up these Hamilton quotes on Etsy for ages!) abstract images, close-ups or animated caricatures. Framed film cells are a popular choice too.

8. Bands

Similar to above, you might want to honour your favourite band or singer in your home. As well as images of the band you or posters could frame concert stubs, album covers or even print out lyrics or music notation from your favourite songs.

9. Abstract

While I do say above there should be some sort of theme to your gallery wall, you could go abstract. Not having a defining theme or shape to your gallery wall means you can chop, change and add to it as often as you like.

10. Family

Many people do a gallery wall because they want to add more pictures of their family to their home. Make this extra special by framing your favourite artworks made by your children too.

11. Natural

Images of the outdoors teamed with wall hangings made from natural materials, such as wood, wool and clay. Macrame looks fab with this idea too.

12. Special Interest

Do you have a special interest? Something you’re super passionate about? It could be a book series, a particular animal, favourite country. Using this to theme a gallery wall around is a great way to add more of something you love to your home

13. Welcome to the Jungle

I love the idea of adding leafy plants on shelves as part of a gallery wall. This makes it feel more alive.

14. Birds of a Feather

Bird prints and paintings make a lovely addition to any room. Team with feather-shaped wall art and driftwood.

15. Cityscapes

Pay homage to your favourite city with images, photographs and maps.
