Helping Your Elderly Parents Remain In Their Home (Where It’s Safe To Do So)

Is your elderly parent struggling to remain in their home due to mobility issues? If this is the case, but there is nothing else getting in the way, then it’s time for you to step in.

There are changes that can be made that will help ensure that your elderly parents are able to stay in their own home, and won’t have to move somewhere else to be taken care of, and it’s always ideal to do this where it’s safe to do so.

In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the changes that can be made, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Home Adaptations

The first thing that we’re going to do is look at home adaptations. It’s not that difficult to make these, but it can be expensive and time consuming.

For example, if they are struggling to get up the stairs, you should be looking into home lifts or a stair lift, depending on what would suit the property, and your relative the best. It’s also worth having an independent inspector come round and take a look at any other adaptations that would need to be made in order for your parents to stay where they are. This way, as much can be done as possible at the same time.

Making changes to a home will take time, so it might be worth having them move in with you while the work is being completed.

Go Round As Often As You Can

If you have the time to go round regularly, try to do so. This gives them companionship, but it also gives them someone to look after them while they’re on their own. You can help by putting in some laundry, you can help by cooking meals and taking them over, and generally just being there for them.

Of course, nobody expects you to go every single day if this is not manageable for you. We all have our own lives, and sometimes no matter how much we wish we could, we are simply not able to find the time. But, a few times per week at least should be enough to give them the support that they need, if it isn’t, then it might not be a good idea for them to remain there anyway.

Rearrange The Home

The final thing that we’re going to be talking about is rearranging the home. Perhaps the home is currently set up in a way that doesn’t work for your parents anymore, and as such needs to be changed around. Chairs should be moved to allow more space, and if it’s a simple fix like this, that’s even better, right?

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you can do to help your elderly parents remain in their home when it’s safe to do so. We cannot stress enough that this is only a good idea, when it is safe for your parents.
