Now the nights have drawn in and it’s dark by 5 pm, you may be looking for ways to make your home feel cosier during the cold winter nights. This post is full of ideas for how you can get snuggled up and bring some extra comfort into your home.
Creating Comfort At Home During Winter
Winter can feel depressing, with dark mornings, dark evenings and chilly days. Personally, I find January especially hard when there’s not even Christmas to look forward to anymore but the days are still long a dreary. One of the things that helps get me through is having some lovely home comforts to enjoy.
It’s not just the home comforts you need during the winter nights, however. You need to think about whether your boiler has been serviced recently, and whether you qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). If you want a warm home, it starts with boiler efficiency and once you sort this out, you can then work on the rest of the comforts that you get in the house through the winter.
Some of these may seem obvious, or they may be new to you, either way, I wanted to share these small comforts that bring me joy.
1. Fluffy Blankets Everywhere
On a winters evening after a busy day, there is nothing better than snuggling up on the sofa, or in bed under a big fluffy blanket. We have a couple in every room of our house (they end up needing to be washed often as a household with a toddler!) and I just find it so comforting – whether it’s to read a book, watch a movie or just relax and listen to the sound of silence.

2. Cosy Candles
Candles always give a room a lovely feel – whether you like a nice scent from a Yankee candle or the crackling fore noise from a Woodwick candle.
Lighting a few candles each evening really helps me relax and feel at home after a long day.
3. Soft Lighting
Just because it’s dark in winter, doesn’t mean we need to be bombarded with bright lights at home. While they may be needed for cooking and working, in the evening it’s nice to tone things down with just lamp light, firelight or strings of fairy lights dotted around.
4. A Big Fluffy Dressing Gown
It’s difficult to express just how much I love my dressing gown. It’s warm. It’s cosy. It’s everything I need on a cold winter morning or after a nice hot bath. It gets a lot of wear so I do like to replace it every couple of years to up the fluffiness.

5. Popcorn Kernels & Hot Chocolate
One of my favourite things to do when it’s cold and wet outside is snuggling up for some family movie time. And what is a movie night with popcorn? Keeping a big bag of kernels in the cupboard means quick and easy popcorn whenever we like.
The same goes for hot chocolate – an instant pick-me-up on a cold day.
6. Bath-time Treats
There are certainly days when I get home and can’t seem to get warm no matter what I do. On these occasions, a super hot and luxurious bath is called for a warm-up and wind down from the day.
Keeping a secret stash of bath time treats means I can have a nice hot relaxing bath with some added bubbles or bath bomb fun whenever I feel I need it.
7. Netflix Subscription
You can say whatever you like about Netflix, but the one thing they do well is produce some stonking good TV. If I’m already feeling a bit ‘Meh’ there’s nothing worse than endless scrolling through the channels and finding nothing remotely interesting to watch.
At least with Netflix, there is always something to get lost in watching, whether it’s the latest box set or classics like The Vicar of Dibley.
