In this post I’m going to be looking at ways you can do some speed decluttering. This could be useful if you have unexpected guests arriving or if you want to give a room a quick once over before work. Here’s how to declutter a room in 30 minutes.
There may be times when you need to declutter a room very quickly. While this post isn’t going to provide long term solutions, having a quick declutter can really improve the overall look of a room in the short term, perfect for when you need a quick fix.
This can also work if you want to start decluttering but feel overwhelmed. Start with one room and do 30 minutes each day until it’s done. Then repeat with each room in your home that need decluttering.
How To Declutter A Room In 30 Minutes
6 Things To Do Before you get started
- Focus on one room only – do not be tempted to other rooms in the 30 minutes.
- Grab anything you might need – bin bag, cloth, box for items to be sorted later.
- Get rid of any distractions. Put your phone in another room. Turn off the TV.
- Set a timer – I usually use Alexa for this.
- Put on some tunes – any music that’s upbeat will do. I always find this really helps to motivate me to get things done (although I like absolute silence when I’m working so I realize this might not be the case for everybody!).
- This is for giving a room a good declutter to get it looking more presentable in half an hour. It’s not for sorting through drawers and cupboards or deep cleaning although wiping the odd spill as you go is fine.

1. Remove Rubbish
The first step is to grab the bin bag and remove any obvious rubbish from the room. This is also a good time to take away any plates and cutlery or coffee cups that are just lying around.
2. Tackle The Worst Area First
Is there one area that is more cluttered than the others? I call these ‘hot spots’.
I know in my own home it’s the dining room table, stuff is always getting dumped there. In the room your decluttering it could be the coffee table, countertop or dressing table.
As this is the worst area it’s going to take the most time to do but also have the biggest impact on how the room look overall. Focus on this first and do as much as you can.
As this is only a quick declutter move and put away the things that are taking up the most space and work backwards but still allow yourself time tackle the other areas.
3. Check The Floor
Next, remove/put away anything that shouldn’t be on the floor, such as shoes, washing baskets, toys, leads and so on. Pick up any debris that’s too big for the vacuum.
Stop and take a look around. How are things looking? Check your timer to see how long you have left before continuing.
4. Grab a Box
Finally, grab a box and fill it with anything else that doesn’t belong in the room. Don’t think about what you’re going to do with the items yet, just chuck them in the box and deal with them later.
Put the box out of the way in a cupboard, garage on another room.
Or, if you plan to do this with pretty much every room in your house today, you can hire a Rubbish Clearance company to come and get rid of everything you don’t want.
5. Take a Look Around
Take a look around. How is the room looking? Better?
If you have any time left you could give surfaces a quick wipe-over or do a very quick vacuum.
And there we have it. How to declutter a room in 30 minutes.
