How To Declutter Jewellery In 5 Steps

Welcome to the next post in my Decluttering Challenge. Today we are going to take a look at how to Declutter Jewellery. This can be quite a tough one as many pieces of Jewellery have a great sentimental value and I would never encourage anyone to get rid of things that are irreplaceable to them.

That said, some people love their jewellery and can end up with more than they know what to do with. This post is going to look at ways to declutter jewellery while still holding on to sentimental and valuable pieces.

How To Declutter Jewellery

1. Take Out All Of Your Jewellery

The first thing to do it take out all of your jewellery from boxes, stands etc and lay it out somewhere safe. I recommend using a big sheet or spreading it across your dining room table so you can really clearly see what you have.

Separate it out into different sections for different types, so rings altogether, then necklaces, the earrings and so on. Untangle anything that needs untangling.

This initial look at all the jewellery that you own should help you initially see what you have and decide whether their are any pieces you immediately think you could get rid of because you no longer like or wear them.

2. Broken Jewellery

Next, remove any jewellery from your collection that is broken or damaged and ask yourself whether or not you want to pay to get it repaired. If it has sentimental value, such as having belonged to a family member then keep it.

If not either add it to a ‘getting rid of the pile’ or ‘this could be valuable pile’ if you think it could be worth some money.

3. Put Away Any Sentimental Jewellery

If the amount of Jewellery you still have seems overwhelming, the next step is to put away anything you know you definitely want to keep.

This should include sentimental items, handmade items from friends or family and anything your children have made for you.

4. Put Away Your Favorites

Next, choose your absolute favourite pieces and set them to one side as well. These could be items that get lots of wear such as small silver hoops or pearl earrings.

It could also be a necklace that you wear on special occasions or a bracelet that you know goes with everything.

5. Assess Everything That’s Left

The final step is to assess everything that is left. Here are some questions you could ask yourself when deciding whether or not to keep the remaining items.

‘When was the last time I wore this piece?’

‘Does it not get worn because I have something similar in my favourites?’

‘Is it comfortable to wear?’

‘Does it discolour/leave marks?’

‘Is it difficult to clean and maintain?’

Asking yourself these questions should allow you to decide which items you truly want to keep and which can be decluttered.

If there is anything you are really undecided on you could always keep it for a few months and then try this process again and see if your feelings have changed.

After you declutter jewellery items is also the perfect time to give everything a good clean and polish before it goes away again.

What To Do With Your Decluttered Jewellery

What you do with your declutter jewellery is entirely up to you, but here are a few suggestions.

Get Items Valued: If any of the jewellery you’re getting rid of contains gold, silver or any gemstones you may want to get it valued to see if it’s worth selling.

Give To Friends and Family: Ask friends and family if there are any pieces they would like.

Donate To Charity: Most charity shops accept donations of both costume and other types of Jewellery.

Sell Online: If you’d still like to get some money for Jewellery but don’t think it’s worth loads, you could try selling individual items or bundles on online platforms such as eBay and Vinted.
