Ever wondered how to keep your wardrobe smelling fresh? Use these top tips to make sure your clean clothes stay smelling clean and fresh for as long as possible.
There’s nothing worse than choosing an outfit to wear only to find one part of it doesn’t smell very nice. While you can freshen clothes up with a quick spritz of something like Febreze, sometimes even that won’t help and clothes will need rewashing.
This post is full of top tips on how to keep both your clothes and wardrobe smelling fresh and clean.
How To Keep Your Wardrobe Smelling Fresh
1. Dry Clothes Straight After Washing
As a business owner and mum to a toddler I know getting the clothes out of the washing machine as soon as it ends isn’t always easy!
I have been guilty in the past of letting clothes sit for a day or two to the point that they needed rewashing!
However, getting in there as quickly as you can will help your clothes smell fresh for longer. If you’re likely to be out or at work then setting a reminder on your phone or Alexa can be an easy way to remind yourself when you get home.
2. Put Your Clothes Away Straight Away
Another one I’m guilty of. I hate putting clothes away. I don’t mind the washing and hanging up to dry, but putting them away is so boring and takes so long!
To this end, I often end up with piles of clothes sitting around in laundry baskets in my kitchen. Of course, this isn’t great as I find sometimes clothes can pick up cooking smells. I really am trying to get into the habit of putting clothes away as soon as I’ve folded them from the washing line or clothes horse.

3. Dry Clothes Outside
There is just something about drying clothes outside that makes them smell nice!
While the weather in the U.K. isn’t always conducive to doing this, I do try to do it when I can. Getting clothes out in the sunshine can also help to remove stubborn stains, especially on whites.
4. Use Dryer Sheets
While they are an added expense and not particularly environmentally friendly, dryer sheets can help your washing smell nice.
You can also place them between layers of clothing in your suitcase when travelling to keep things smelling fresh while you’re on the road.
To keep your wardrobe smelling fresh you can also hook a dryer sheet over a few of your hangers.
5. Make DIY Linen Spray
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, linen spray can really help freshen up clothes that aren’t smelling so good.
If you’re looking to be more environmentally friendly, you could even try making your own. Here is a post all about how to make your own linen spray.
6. Try DIY Scented Sachets
DIY Scented sachets are super easy to make and you can choose your favourite scents to fill them with. All you need is a small amount of rice, some fabric and your chosen scent, such as lavender.
See this tutorial from Food 52 for more details on what to do.

As well as using these to keep your wardrobe smelling fresh, they can also be used to freshen up bedroom drawers too.
7. Use Ironing Water
I don’t iron. At all. Life is too short. But, my Mum does and she swears by ironing water to help clothes smell nice and fresh.
You can buy it from most supermarkets or you could try making your own.
8. Avoid Keeping Shoes In Your Wardrobe
Clothes tend to absorb smell pretty easily so keeping your smelly running trainers in your wardrobe probably isn’t the best idea!
