How to Plan and Complete a Full Garden Renovation

Collaborative post

If you want to overhaul your garden then you will know what a big job this can be. With that being said, the last thing you want is to go into your renovation blindly, without a good idea of what it’s going to take to get the result you need.

Make a Mood Board

The first thing you need to do is take the time to create a mood board. Make a floor plan of how you want your garden to look, measure it out, and then make sure that everything is to scale.

You can use software here, but if you’re not tech-savvy then having a simple hand-drawn plan is usually the best way for you to help visualize the space you have.

If you want maximum seating space then account for things like this, and also be mindful of areas to grow plants and herbs.

If you have furniture then you need to work this into your floor plan too as this is a good way for you to calculate how much space you need when working. If you have a deadline of when you want the work to be completed then there’s nothing wrong with this, but at least make sure that your plans are feasible and that they are realistic with the timescale you have.

Make an Action Plan

You also need to plan the logistics and make an action plan. The first thing you will probably need to plan for is new fencing, as you might not be able to get anything done unless you have the boundary sorted. If you can’t figure out where to begin then a spider graph can be useful.

If you know that you need to gut the garden and start over then account for how many hours this is going to take. It could be worth looking into electric mini digger hire if you can, because the cost-savings from hiring equipment like this can translate to hundreds saved later down the line.

The last thing you want to be dealing with is delays if you’re on a short timescale, so be mindful of that.

Account for the Weather

Although you may have a plan and you may also have everything you need to get started, you do need to account for the weather.

You need to make sure that you are always mindful of the changing seasons. If you plan your renovation during the summer then this is great, but if it ends up taking a little longer or if you can’t get hold of a construction company to help you in time then this could push things to the next season, which could prove problematic if you are dealing with strong winds or changing weather conditions.

If you can keep things like this in mind when the time comes for you to plan your renovation then you will soon find that it becomes easier for you to keep track of everything and that you can also make your life a lot easier.
