Spring is almost here, and once you’ve spring cleaned your home you might be thinking of turning your attention to the garden. After a long, cold winter, chances are it doesn’t look its best.
Many of us are dealing with patchy lawns, overgrown shrubs and generally a tired and unwelcoming-looking space. Once you’ve given it a spruce up you’ll be ready to sit outside when the sun comes up and invite your loved ones over here are five ways you can get more out of it.
5 Ways to Get More Out of Your Garden
1. Add Decking and Seating
Decking looks great in gardens and is practical too. Extras like steps, railings or balustrades finish off the look and as a bonus, decking will add value to your home.
If you have an area of a garden that you’re not sure what to do with then something like this could be ideal as it makes the space usable and allows you to add some seating.
This could be a table and chairs so you and your friends and family can dine outside when it’s warm.
It could be a bistro set or bench for you and your partner to watch the sun go down, or even a swing or egg chair that you can sit and read a book in and have some peaceful moments to yourself.
2. Build A Pond
A pond is a great way to add some interest to your garden, you can create some beautiful ponds in all kinds of styles.
Add some plants in the water and colourful flowers around the edges to make it look even more attractive.
Consider adding a water feature to your pond, or you can have a standalone one. They come in different sizes, so you can find one that fits your garden perfectly.
Water features are relaxing to listen to and as a bonus help to drown out outside noise.
3. Invite Nature In
If you have a spacious garden, think about preserving a section of it in its natural state. Insects and animals thrive in long grass, which offers them shelter and food, unlike a neatly trimmed lawn.
Maintaining a wild area can promote biodiversity and create a more vibrant ecosystem within your garden.
Something we can all do is feeding the birds as the colder months when the ground freezes and their natural food sources dry up.
This means they actively rely on us as humans for survival during this time. Some bird seed and a feeder is super inexpensive, if your budget is bigger a bird table and/or bird bath make quirky features and also help the wildlife.
Use fertilisers and pesticides that are wildlife friendly too, or skip out on them altogether and go with manual weeding methods instead.
4. Purchase A Pergola
If you’re thinking of improving your garden, a wonderful option would be to install a gazebo or pergola.
These structures offer a lovely way to enjoy the outdoors while also providing you with a bit of privacy.
By encouraging climbing plants like ivy and roses to grow over the wood, you can create even more coverage and boost the beauty of the space.
You could also place large potted plants and hanging baskets around can further block unwanted views.
Setting up a seating area or table underneath and you can relax outside without being directly visible to nosy neighbours.
A Louvered roof pergola allows you to adjust the shade and light levels too a lot like a big blind that you’d get on your window- perfect for protecting against the sun (and rain showers!) during your summer garden parties.
A gazebo or pergola adds both functionality and charm to your garden, making it the perfect spot to unwind and entertain.
5. Grow Some Plants
There are lots of easy to plants so you don’t need to be majorly green-fingered to be able to do well with your crops.
You could grow things in pots, or you could section out an area and create a little veggie patch. You could plant trees at the bottom of the garden, even a simple herb garden looks nice, and can save you lots of money.
Having lots of brightly coloured flowers dotted around in your outdoor space will always bring a smile to your face and make the garden feel like a natural little haven.
