What Makes A House A Home?

When we first moved into our house almost five years ago, I’ll admit it took a long time for it to really feel like home.

What Makes A House A Home?

Initially, we did a lot of work to the house and for the first six months, it was a bit of a building site while all the other rooms remained decorated in the style of the previous owners.

There wasn’t anywhere in the house that really felt like it was ours even though we owned it and for a long time my Mum and Dads house where I’d lived before felt still felt like ‘home’

Of course, eventually the house did start to feel more like our home. I think what helped was finishing the living room to a point where it was nice relaxing place to sit and enjoy rather than being covered in dust sheets and paint brushes. And after that was done all the other rooms started to come along one by one.

No matter what else needs doing in the house the living room feels like our own and is a place we can relax even if we renovating or redecorating elsewhere.

If you’re planning a large renovation it’s always worth having one room that’s DIY free that can be a sanctuary away from all the stress and mess.

Tips for making your house feel like a home even when you’re renovating.

  • If you can, avoiding moving in until at least one room is complete. It will give you somewhere to relax – whether it’s your bedroom, the living room or even the dining room so you can eat dinner each night.
  • Take lots of pictures so you can see how much progress you’ve made even though it might not feel like it!
  • Give social media a break. Looking at other people’s perfect finished houses could make you feel worse about your own.
  • Add touches that make it feel homely. While it can be tempting to leave everything in in boxes for as long as possible to avoid breakages, having familiar items around you can be a huge comfort.
