Where To Find Second Hand Christmas Decorations (5 Places)

As many of us are taking a more environmentally friendly approach to what we bring into our homes, here are plenty of places to find second-hand Christmas Decorations.

With Christmas just around the corner, you might start thinking about when to start decorating your Christmas. You may also be tempted to buy some new decorations. The shops are full of them and if you’re on Instagram or TikTok it can seem like all you see is perfectly decorated and coordinated homes.

However, if you do decide it’s time for some new decorations why not consider buying second-hand? Pre-loved items are much cheaper and better for the environment too. And while it can be tricky to get everything matchy-matchy, you might just find some amazing hidden gems.

Why Buy Second-Hand Christmas Decorations?

There are lots of great reasons to shop second hand, I take a look at some of them below.

It’s Cheaper – Buying second-hand items are often much cheaper than buying new ones, especially when it comes to things like Christmas mugs, bowls and plates.

It’s Better For The Environment – Buying second-hand helps to lower the demand for new items and can prevent things from ending up in landfill. Sequins and Glitter are popular components in Christmas Decorations but neither of these is recyclable and can take as long as five hundred to decompose if they even ever do.

It Supports Charities – Buying from charity shops is a great way to support your favourite causes, especially at Christmas.

Where To Find Second-Hand Christmas Decorations

1. Charity Shops

As I mentioned above, charity shops are a great place to find all sorts of Christmas decorations in the run-up to the festive period. I’ve also seen lots of other sought-after items such as wooden advent calendars and nativity scenes.

2. Vinted

Last year, Vinted made some changes to try and encourage its users to buy and sell more homeware, as well as clothes and toys.

Personally, I am a big fan of Vinted and much prefer it to other online buying and selling platforms such as Shpock and Gumtree.

While there are postage and buyer fees to consider, Vinted is a great place to put together bundles of items, many of which sellers will often offer discounts on.

3. Facebook Marketplace

If you’re looking for something a bit closer to home, then Facebook Marketplace could be the answer, plus there are no fees to worry about.

Just search for Christmas Decorations in your local area or a radius you’re happy to pick up. This is perfect if you’re after bigger items such as a new (to you!) Christmas tree.

4. eBay

Is there anything you can’t find on eBay? While there are loads of amazing second-hand items to be had on eBay, don’t forget there are lots of people selling new too and often these are cheap items from China, which aren’t the best choice if you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint.

5. Family & Friends

I think it’s always worth asking family and friends if they have they’re getting rid of that you could have before they donate or bin it. You could offer cash or a token gesture such as a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates.

Where To Find Second-Hand Christmas Decorations – Final Thoughts

It can be really easy to let social media and television ads convince us that we need to create a whole new Christmas look in our homes every year. But that is simply not the case. In fact, I want my daughter to enjoy pulling out Christmas Decorations that she remembers from her childhood.

I want to let her choose one new decoration for the tree each year, even if it doesn’t quite match our existing colour scheme and making those types of memories will always be more important to me than buying new or everything looking perfect and matching.
