Which Type of Flooring Is Right For Your Home?

This is a collaborative post

Choosing the right flooring for your home is a big decision. Flooring is needed for every single space and getting wrong could cause no end of problems. This post takes a look at the different types of flooring you could use in your home and which rooms they are best suited to.

Why Is Choosing The Right Flooring For Your Home So Important?

Choosing the right flooring for a room is important because getting it wrong could end up costing you money in the long run. You also want your house to look good without blowing budget.

When it comes to choosing your flooring you’ll need to take the following things into consideration:

  • is the flooring going to be in a high-traffic area?
  • does the flooring need to be easy to clean?
  • is the flooring likely to get wet?
  • could the flooring be damaged by sunlight?
  • is the flooring warm enough for the space? Tiles can look lovely in a kitchen but they are cold, so additional costs such as underfloor heating may need to be factored in.

There are also other things you may wish to consider, such as choosing a type of flooring that is natural or more environmentally friendly.

Should I Have The Same Type Of Flooring Throughout My Home?

Most people choose to have different types of flooring in their homes. For example, laminate and carpet are the most popular choices for living rooms and dining rooms.

Vynil and Lino work well in the kitchen because they are easy to clean and are water resistant.

Conversely, carpet and laminate should be avoided in the bathroom as they get damaged when they are wet.

No matter which flooring you choose for each room in your home, you’ll also want to think about the care it requires.

Wood flooring may need revarnishing every few years. If you have children or pets it might be worth investing in a carpet cleaner.

Wood Flooring

Solid wood flooring is a popular choice for many homes. It is most commonly used in hallways, kitchens and other living spaces as well as some bedrooms. Hardwood flooring is durable and never really goes out of style.

Solid wood flooring, can be expensive, however, and your budget might not quite stretch to having this throughout your home. Click Engineered Wood Flooring is a great, more affordable alternative and has some benefits that hardwood flooring does not, such as performing better in humidity.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is another affordable choice when hardwood flooring is out of budget. While it may not last quite as long and can be susceptible to water damage (which is why I would suggest avoiding it in the kitchen and bathroom!) it comes in a wide range of colours and is a practical choice for living rooms, and dining rooms.

Tiles

Tiles are the perfect choice for bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories and utility rooms. Ceramic tiles are water resistant, slip-resistant, durable, and easy to clean meaning they need to be replaced far less often than other types of flooring.

Tiles can be cold though, so you may want to consider underfloor heating to help counteract this.  Of course, this is an added cost which needs to be weighed up against your budget and how much you’re prepared to do.

Reclaimed floor tiles can make a more affordable and environmentally friendly choice for flooring in your home.

Stone Flooring

Stone flooring has a natural beauty all of its own. Just like tiles, it’s durable, easy to clean and hardwearing. The natural pattern in the stone means your floor will have it’s own unique look.

Stone flooring is typically used in kitchens, hallways and utility rooms. It’s a great option if you have pets as it’s difficult for them to damage it.

Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring is slowly becoming more popular as people look to be more sustainable about the choices they make when furnishing their homes.

It is much cheaper than traditional hardwood flooring and therefore provides an affordable option for those on a budget. It also has soundproofing properties and is very durable – so perfect for anyone with children or pets.

Carpet

When it comes to choosing to the flooring in the home, the first thing most people think of is carpet. Carpet is a practical choice, that comes in a huge range of colours, styles and textures. It’s reasonably durable but very easy to replace should it get damaged. It also has a wide range of price points, from cheap and basic to luxurious and expensive.

Carpet is generally chosen in most living areas as well for bedrooms, hallways, playrooms and offices.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl is one of the most durable types of flooring and is also popular thanks to its very reasonable costs. It can be used in any room but is usually chosen for the kitchen or bathroom as it’s water resistant and easy to clean.

Vinyl flooring is the perfect choice for families because it’s so hardwearing.

There is lots to thinking about when it comes to choosing flooring in your home and hopefully this post has help you choose which are best suited to your needs.
