5 Things To Declutter Today To Make Your Home Feel Tidier

Decluttering your home can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task. In this situation, small steps in the right direction can be key to getting started. This post takes a look at five things to declutter today which are an easy way to begin decluttering your home.

Today I’m going to take a look at something you should be able to declutter from your home with ease. The reason I have chosen these particular items is because there should be very little decision making involved.

When decluttering your home, what can sometimes become exhausting is continually asking yourself whether or not you need something, will it get used in the future, will you miss it or want to reread or reuse it at some point.

5 Things To Declutter Today

The items listed here will almost always be items you can definitely throw away or put in the recycling. It takes away some of the mental load of decluttering for days when you don’t feel like doing much but still want to attempt to be productive.

1. Magazines and Newspapers

If you have lots of newspapers and magazines lying around, these can usually go straight in the bin if you’ve read them.

If you’re keeping them for a crossword or a particular recipe then cut that section out and get rid of the rest. This also goes for old TV guides.

2. Socks With Holes In

Do you feel as though whenever you put a pair of socks on there seems to be a hole in them? This happens to me a lot, even though I continually resolve to get rid of holey socks as and when I find them.

Take some time to go through your sock drawer and check for holes. If you’re happy to wear mismatched socks (I know some people don’t like to, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest, especially as someone who is passionate about promoting my love of slow fashion) pair odd ones back together to avoid extra waste.

3. Junk Mail

While some junk mail can be useful, much of isn’t really of any use to us, especially when it’s for things we’re not remotely interested in.

However, it can be easy to end up with a pile of it thinking we’ll look at it later or maybe want to keep some of the info for future reference. Most information can be found online nowadays so make a note of the company and then bookmark their website.

If you find you get a lot of junk mail or catalogues sent to you, you may to see if you can unsubscribe from them being sent.

4. Old boxes and Packaging

We are absolute fiends for keeping the packaging and boxes for new items. This is usually so that if there is anything wrong with the item we can return it.

However, boxes can often end up lying around our house for months. As I write this I can see three in our conservatory I need to get rid of!

While you should get rid of packaging (recycling where you can) don’t forget to keep the instructions although if you want to go super clutter free most can be found online if you need them in the future.

5. Out of date Paperwork

It can sometimes feel like we need to keep all paperwork for fear of needing to reference it at a later date. And of course, there are definitely things you should be keeping like wage slips and letters from HMRC.

That said there are plenty of items of paperwork than can be decluttered, such as old appointment letters, bills that are over a year old, out of date insurance policy’s and so on.

See this post for more on decluttering paperwork.

And there we have it, five things to declutter today.
