Spring is on its way, hopefully, and the long cold British winter will be nothing more than a memory that gives you a shiver now and again.
Spring is the perfect time to get your garden ready for the upcoming summer and hopefully warmer months – well, as warm as it gets in the UK! Check out these tips for preparing your outdoor space for changing seasons and be ready for the Great British Summer.
Clean, Clean Clean
The first step to getting your garden ready for the summer is to make sure it’s clean. This includes tidying up, removing dead plant material and weeds, and checking for any damage.
Before you start planting anything in your garden, make sure to give it a once over. Look for any broken planters, containers, or pots. If you have any animal pests, check for them. Remove all the animal droppings from your garden, too. This will help prevent fungi and diseases from spreading through the soil.
Once the cleaning is done, put on some gloves and get out that hose! No one wants a dirty garden, so keep it spick and span with a good wash down.
Prepare The Soil
The soil is the foundation for your garden, so it’s essential to prepare it before planting anything. You’ll need to loosen up the soil, which you can do by adding organic material like compost or manure. You’ll also want to add fertiliser and lime, which help with drainage and acidity, respectively.
Order Garden Furniture
It’s time to order garden furniture online and freshen up your outdoor space. Buying new garden furniture is an excellent idea because it will give you the chance to update your outdoor space or replace old furniture – either way, you’ll be getting your outside area ready for the warmer months ahead.
Garden furniture doesn’t have to be expensive, so don’t shy away from looking at second-hand shops or auctions if you want something more unique.
You could also consider buying extra chairs or tables if you want to have people around when the sun decides to shine.
Plant Cool Weather Annual Flowers
Lots of people will be rushing to the garden centres for annuals and perennials at the earliest opportunity, but it’s worth bearing in mind that many of these plants won’t last long through the
winter.
Instead, you could plant some cool weather annual flowers, which should be perfect for this time of year.
Pansies, violas, and sweet peas are hardy and will be able to withstand the colder temperatures that are coming our way during the next few months. They can also grow in shade or light, making them perfect for gardens with less sun exposure.
Banish Weeds
Weeds can be a pain in the backside. They increase and destroy your garden. No one wants to spend their time pulling out weeds when they could be planting flowers. It’s best to banish these pesky plants now before they take over your whole outdoor space. You can do this by covering the ground with mulch, which will stop the weed seeds from sprouting. Then you need to pull up all of the weed stems that already exist. Be sure to get as close to the roots as possible because the weeds will come back if you don’t get them all!
