How To Clean White Plastic Garden Chairs

We had some white garden chairs which had been sat out in our garden over the winter. Our garden doesn’t currently have a shed and so they had been left out to the elements for several months, and were frankly, in a bit of a state.

While we had recently bought some lovely new garden furniture as part of our garden make-over, we like to keep some spare chairs for the odd occasion we have a lot of guests, such as a family barbeque or birthday get-together.

Just because the chairs were looking a bit grim, there was no way I was going just throw them away. I think, on the whole, people are far too quick to get rid of things that actually have plenty of life left in them in.

So, it was time to get down to some scrubbing to see if I could get the chairs looking presentable. First of all, I decided just to give them a good scrub with soapy water. This didn’t really do a lot, to be honest, but I thought it was worth a try. The biggest problem was the chairs seemed to be covered in some sort of mould which was really difficult to get off.

Next, I tried kitchen spray with bleach. This actually worked pretty well and did make a dent in some of the stains on the chairs, but there was still a lot left.

Finally, I tried Cillit Bang Mould Spray. This had the biggest affect on the chairs and really helped clean them up nice. It’s very strong stuff though, so be warned! After spraying I used a sponge scourer to really scrub the chairs and then washed everything o

ff with the hose.

Overall you can see the chairs were eventually looking much, much better. I think they will take another couple of goes to get them completely spotless, but for now, we were happy that they looked clean enough to use and be sat on.

Tips for cleaning your plastic garden chairs:

  • Prevention is always better than cure – keep them away from the elements either in a shed or under a protective cover.
  • It might take a few attempts to get your chairs looking like new again. You could do this over a few days rather than all in one go if it makes life easier.
  • Always use bleach spray / Cillit bang / other chemicals in an open space with plenty of ventilation.
  • Wear a mask and gloves for protection if you feel you need to.
  • Keep chemicals and cleaning products away from children and pets.
