There are times in life when you might want to declutter your home fast. It’s a task that can feel overwhelming but there are a few quick fixes you can try that might help.
How To Declutter Your Home Fast
Here some tips for when you want to declutter your home. This could be because of a house move, unexpected guests or just because you want your home to feel tidier but are really limited on time.
1. Tackle Hotspots
Hotspots are areas around your home where clutter builds easily. Tackling these is one of the best ways to declutter your home fast.
For us, it’s definitely our dining table that gets cluttered. We tend to dump things there when we come home and often they’ll end up staying for a day or two and it just makes the whole room feel cluttered even when it isn’t.
Other problem hotspots can often be:
- Kitchen Counters
- Coat and Shoe Area / Porch / By the front door.
- Coffee Table / Hallway dresser
These are the most common but of course if this an issue in your home you’ll know which areas area are a problem.
Often the problem is these areas filling up with things that don’t really have a home elsewhere such as keys, wallets, letters, receipts, headphones and odds and ends people have emptied out of their pockets. It also means you can end spending a long time searching for these things each time you leave the house.
Simple storage solutions can really help. Put up a key rack and add a small basket for each person in your house to but their odd bits and pieces in. While this doesn’t fully solve the problem it does mean items are grouped together and not left lying around.
Another issue can be having too many coats and shoes for the storage space you have. Try to switch between summer and winter coats and shoes and make sure hats, scarfs and gloves go away at the end of the season.

2. Accept Help
If your house need a very quick declutter then there’s not shame in asking for help from a friend, family member or even a professional declutterer. Two of you will get the job done much quicker, even with them having to refer to you for things.
This is also a great option if you have limited mobility as another person will be able to help you reach high areas and do some heavy lifting if it’s something you struggle with.
3. Have A Plan
Even if you’re only decluttering the worst areas in your home, you need a plan for what your going to do with the decluttered items. Factor taking items to the recycling center or charity shop into your limited time.
4. Add Emergency Storage Where You Can
When you don’t have time to properly go through every item individually but you still need a space that looks more decluttered adding storage boxes can be a quick fix. While it doesn’t full solve the problem, having items neatly boxed up will look nicer than them being out around your home.
It also makes it easy to hide items in the garage, wardrobe or shed even as a temporary measure.
5. Consider Putting Items Into Storage
If all else fails, consider putting items into storage until you have the time to deal with them properly. This can be quite a costly option but can be for the best, for example, if your moving in with family while you wait for a house sale to go through.
