To be honest, in terms of buying and selling platforms, Facebook Marketplace is probably up there with eBay for size. People also use it as there are no fees, however, it does lack the buyer protection eBay offers and is notorious for people being time wasters.
That said, in my opinion, Facebook Marketplace is one the best places to bag yourself free and cheap garden items locally. Last year we managed to get a free toddler slide for free, we were so grateful and it’s already had so use.

There are loads of benefits to buying second-hand furniture, toys and even larger items such as fence panels and sheds for your garden.

Why Facebook Marketplace?
Facebook marketplace tends to be the best place to find larger items for free or very cheap, especially in your local area as they’ll often be collection only.
More often than not people just want rid of things to make space for new items they’ve bought or because they’re moving house and so on.
There are a few things you’ll need to think about when searching on Facebook.
This could be things like how far you’re happy/able to travel to pick things up and whether you might be happy to pay for the delivery of the items (either from the person giving it away or someone else who can help you out) which may be well worth it if you’re getting something for free or next to nothing.
How To Find Suitable Items
If you don’t find anything suitable from doing a search, there are a few other things you can try.
First of all, you could try putting out a shout-out to your own friends and family to see if they have anything they are getting rid of.
We happily give stuff we no longer need to our friends and family and I’ll often send my friends pics of stuff to see if they want it before I try selling it.
Another option is to put a shout-out on Facebook marketplace asking if anyone has anything they are getting rid of.
People are often happy to get rid of stuff they no longer need without needing to go to the tip or recycling centre.

I live in a large town, so if you live in a city you may find there is a lot more available. Also, this was just one quick search on one day. New stuff is added all the time, so keep looking.
I think it’s worth making a list of things you’re looking for too to help keep you on track and make sure you’re only buying things you need for your garden.
