Painted Rocks: Poppy Napkins Decoupage Rocks

I have something a little bit different on the blog today – a craft tutorial. I’ve been wanted to join in the painted rocks craze for a while, but my artistic skills are seriously lacking so I’ve been learning to use napkins decoupage rocks instead.

I’d also been wanting to do something for Remembrance Day that was a bit different to just wearing my poppy badge – so I made these painted rocks (well they look painted, it’s actually just decopage rocks and it’s really easy to do)

To create these beautiful poppy decoupage rocks, you will need:

  • Several flat rocks – size doesn’t really matter – I ‘borrowed’ some from my Mum’s garden and did a combination of small and large
  • White paint – I actually used some leftover tile paint but
  • Poppy Napkins – I just ordered a 4 pack and that was more than enough – you don’t need specific napkins to decoupage rocks with, any type will do
  • Decoupage glue – I used Modgepodge
  • If you’re planning on placing the rocks outside you’ll need a sealant such as modgepodge outdoors or a spray like this one
  • Two small paint brushes.

How To Make Decoupage Rocks

  1. Paint the rocks white, one side at a time, and leave to dry. I did try one initial unpainted rock but the poppy image from the napkin didn’t show up particularly well compared to the white background.
  2. Carefully cut out the poppies from the napkin. As they are going onto a white rock this doesn’t need to be super accurate.
  3. Place the cutout poppies on the rock to see how they might look/fit. Cover the rock with a layer of glue and stick the poppies on, the poppy design facing upwards.
  4. Gently cover the top of the poppies with another layer of glue and carefully smooth them out with the paintbrush.
  5. Leave the poppy decoupage rocks to dry overnight.
  6. If you’ll be leaving the painted rocks outside they’ll need sealing with your choice of sealant. If you’d like more information on sealing rocks, see this post.

I was so pleased with how these poppy decoupage rocks turned out – I’m not usually a very crafty person so I think they look fab!

Also, the napkins decoupage fun doesn’t have to stop here – you could use any type of napkin you like – Christmas, Easter, other flowers, animals – the choice is yours!
