When it comes to decluttering your home, it is a task that can sometimes seem overwhelming, especially if you want to get it done quickly. So, should you hire a professional declutterer? Would they help speed up the process? I take a look at the pros and cons of hiring a professional declutterer to help you declutter your home.

You may not have even realized that professional declutterers even exist, but they do and they will come to your home and help you get started with a big clear out.

When To Use A Professional Declutterer

While you can always declutterer your home yourself there are a few occasions you might want to get professional help.

If you’re planning to move house or need a big declutter before putting your house on the market then this might be the time get professionals in. They will help you be ruthless and will work with you to help get your house ready by a certain date.

You may also need help when decluttering a house for a family member that has passed away or been moved to a care home. Dealing with someone else’s possessions can be daunting, and using a professional declutterer could really help you make tough decisions.

Long-term illnesses can sometimes affect mobility and therefore your ability to get jobs done around your home. Working together with a professional could mean you get much more done than you would be able to on your own.

The same goes for mental illness – if you’ve been unwell but now feel ready to tackle things a professional could help motivate you if you feel comfortable having them in your home.

Pros Of Using A Professional Declutterer

Here are some of the pros of using a professional declutter:

  • Can help you get things done quickly and efficiently.
  • May have ideas for storage you haven’t considered.
  • Non-sentimental so can help you decide what to and what to get rid of better than a friend or partner.
  • Can be a great motivator even after they have left.
  • Could help you to get over any initial overwhelm to get started.
  • Once you’re on top of things it’s much easier to clean, tidy and maintain your home.

Cons Of Using A Professional Declutterer

  • Cost. Paying someone to help might not be affordable for everyone.
  • May feel anxious or embarrassed about letting someone into your home.
  • You may not like their approach or methods for decluttering.
  • May be difficult fitting in full days to work with them if you’re busy with work and family life.

A professional declutterer should always be non-judgmental and never force you to get rid of anything you don’t want to get rid of. They can also help you decide what to do with items you have decluttered, such as where to store, donate, recycle or sell them.

Different professionals will have different areas of expertise so it might be worth looking for someone that specializes in an area that you particularly struggle with such as books or clothing.

They should also be able to help you with finding storage solutions for the things that you do want to keep, so you home feels tidier and more efficient overall once they have worked their magic.

Personally I think there is absolutely no shame in hiring someone to help you declutter and organize your home. It’s no different to hiring a cleaner or gardener. While these are of courses jobs you can do yourself sometimes your time and sanity should get the professionals in.

And don’t forget, often people that do this as a profession love to do it, just in the same way many cleaners love cleaning and will achieve far more in an hour or two that I could in a day!
