How To Make a Bed More Comfortable (7 Awesome Hacks!)

There’s nothing worse than being awake all night due an uncomfortable bed. This post is full tips and tricks to help you make your bed more comfortable and hopefully ensure you get a restful nights sleep.

How To Make A Bed More Comfortable

1. Change The Mattress

The biggest thing that most people find is making their bed uncomfortable is their mattress. The advice is that our mattresses should be changed every 6-8 years and turned over (if doubled-sided) and rotated every three months.

Of course, this isn’t something the majority of people do, so should be your first port of call if your bed is uncomfortable. Another issue is could be that your mattress isn’t the right level of firmness for your taste.

Personally, I like a very soft mattress and my husband likes a much firmer one. We ended up with a comprise which is somewhere between the two but it does mean neither of us is particularly happy!

Most mattress and bed sales rooms will let you try different mattresses before you buy, with some even offering money-back guarantees if you’re unhappy after a few months.

2. Try Investing In A Mattress Topper

If replacing your mattress isn’t an option, a mattress topper could be the next best thing to try. Mattress toppers typically make an old or worn mattress more comfortable and studies show they improve the quality of sleep for those using them.

3. Buy A New Bed Frame

There are times when it’s not the mattress that’s the issue but the bed frame itself. If it’s a metal bedframe then sometimes the springs can go causing the mattress to droop on one side.

With a wood bedframe, the slats can break and bow, especially if the middle support is lacking. As the mattress tends to be the more expensive part of the bed, bedframes can be picked up quite cheaply.

Of course, repairing your bedframe, such as replacing broken wooden slats, could also be an option.

4. Invest In Nicer Pillows

If you’re waking up with a crick in your neck then your pillows could be the problem rather than the bed itself. While new pillows can be picked up reasonably cheaply, I often find they lose their shape quickly so it is worth investing in good quality ones.

Also, try sleeping with more or fewer pillows. When I was younger I also used to sleep with two, but now I’m older I prefer just one.

5. Change Your Duvet With the Seasons

One thing that can keep us up at night and make us feel uncomfortable is being too hot or too cold. Changing your duvet with the seasons and as the temperature changes can help prevent this.

6. Add Blankets and Cushions for Style and Comfort

As well as looking nice blankets and cushions can be a great way to make your bed more comfortable, for example, if you want to prop yourself up to watch television or want to add a bit of extra warmth on a very cold night.

7. Take a Look at the Rest of the Room

While mattresses are usually the biggest culprit for making a bed uncomfortable, there are lots of other ways your sleep can be affected by what’s going on in your bedroom.

Try to make sure the space is calm and uncluttered, with warm or neutral tones on the walls and soft lighting.

Whether you decide to try a mattress topper or think new pillows might be the answer I hope these tips help you make a bed more comfortable.
