Are you thinking about preparing your home for spring? Here are some simple things you can do to prepare your home for the warmer weather.

9 Tips For Preparing Your Home For Spring

Spring is all about new beginnings and can seem like the perfect time to give your home a bit of spruce up.

1. Switch Off Your Heating

With rising energy costs on everybody’s minds, now is the perfect time to switch off your heating as the days become warmer.

While your heating system is switched off you can give radiators a thoroughly clean and even bleed them, something which it’s recommended you do twice a year.

2. Put Away Winter Duvets & Blankets

Another thing to do once the warmer weather arrives is the switch from winter to summer duvets and put away any heavy blankets.

You may want to wash duvets before storing them away for the summer if you’re lucky enough to have a washing machine that’s big enough to fit them in. Alternatively, you could take duvets to the launderette.

3. Deep Clean

Spring always feels like a good time for a deep clean of those things we might only tackle a couple of times a year such as the oven, cupboards, filters and behind sofas and other furniture or appliances.

Taking a weekend to dedicate to these jobs can help you get lots done in one go and means you can head into spring with your home sparkling.

4. Preparing Your Home For Spring: Prep The Garden

After the cold winter months, there is plenty to do in the garden when spring finally starts to roll around.

  • Clean and wash the Greenhouse (if you have one!)
  • Tidy up borders, rockeries and lawn edge removing any weeds that have popped up.
  • Start planting seeds and bulbs.
  • Clear away any debris, such as leaves, leftover from winter.
  • Air out and freshen up any garden furniture, wash cushions and remove any mould (tips on cleaning white plastic chairs here!)
  • Jetwash patios.

5. Put Away Winter Coats

Now the weather is a bit warmer, you might want to think about putting away winter hats, coats, scarves and boots and replacing them with summer equivalents.

6. Wash The Windows

There’s nothing like that bright spring sunshine streaming in to show you how much you windows need a clean!

Windows are a nice easy job that you can tackle yourself but you could also hire a window cleaner too.

While this is a service I know many people already have on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, you could also book a window cleaning service as a one-off to do an inside and outside clean of all of your windows.

7. Spring Scents

When you’re done with the spring cleaning, you may want to start making your house smell spring-like too. Candles with scents such as blossom and fresh-cut grass can really help make your home feel fresh. You could also opt for bunches of fresh flowers too.

8. Preparing Your Home For Spring: Declutter

Spring can feel like the perfect time to declutter your home. Tackle one room at a time and make sure you have a plan for everything you want to get rid of.

Last year I ran a popular series on decluttering and you can find some of the posts from it below:

9. Don’t Forget The Garden

When it’s summer the garden is used daily, but for the rest of the year, it’s often just a small part of our home that’s barely used. If you’ve got the funds and desire for a dedicated space away from your home then why not consider building a garden room? Spring is the best time to get a project like this going; it’s warm enough to have construction done outside and will be completed just in time for the warm sunny days!

Garden rooms are the “in” thing today, with homeowners utilising them as home offices, entertainment spaces and even gyms or hot tub rooms! The main appeal over a traditional extension is avoiding the cost and headache of getting an architect involved and having to go through the Planning Permission process. Furthermore, the inconvenience of having work done inside your home whilst you are living in it is unappealing.

A garden room is more cost-effective than an extension or conservatory, just make sure you picked a reliable company to do the work.

For example, this company in Scotland seem to specialise in these buildings and has many positive reviews with a dedicated showroom so you can see their work.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these tips which should help you with preparing your home for spring!
